Please note that even though it is now too late to earn extra credit for discussions, you are encouraged to continue using the Forum 5 discussion board to talk about the novel and get feedback about ideas for the last essay. I will continue to read and respond to messages posted there, and feedback can come from other students as well. Messages posted from this point forward are not worth credit, but they might ultimately help you with your essay.

I would like to remind everyone one last time that graded essays all have comments attached to them. I have had some questions from students who were not aware that I have been making suggestions and comments. If you can't figure out how to view them, let me know. It would be very counterproductive to turn in Essay 5 without reviewing the suggestions I have been making to you throughout the semester first. Above all, please don't forget to use parenthetical citations when you quote from the novel. Your grade will be penalized heavily if you don't use MLA citations and Works Cited list (even though the novel is probably your only work cited).
Once the grades for Essay 5 appear, the total scores will be final and will indicate your semester grade: 900-1000=A, 800-899=B, 700-799=C, 600-699=D.

Extra Credit

Remember that to get the extra credit points for discussions that you participated in, I need you to collect all your previous posts by copying and pasting them into one document. Then send that document as Homework #5 by the listed deadline. If you neglect to do so, you won't get the points. You can omit extremely brief posts like "ok, thanks."

For those who did not do the extra credit discussions, there is no homework #5. Just ignore it, as there is no penalty for submitting nothing to Homework 5. It is too late to earn further extra credit after May 23.

I will open a discussion forum for anyone seeking help on the last essay or hoping to better understand the novel. This forum is the last chance for extra credit, and remember that anytngny post should be included in the collection you send as Hw5. The forum will also be helpful in preparing the last essay.

Please be aware that in reading the last essays, I constantly ask myself if they show an in-depth reading of the book rather than a glance at a summary. Ask yourself the same question as you write your essay. If your paper looks like it could have been written by someone who never read the book, it won't get a good grade. Also remember the Works Cited list that will have at least one entry, the novel itself.

Drop Date

Hello English 1A students,
This Friday May 13 is the last day to drop and receive a W. If you have fewer than 380 points and have done no extra credit at this point, it is not possible for you to receive a C or higher.

I also want to let everyone know that the College has asked the faculty to drop students who no longer actively participate in the course. If you failed to turn in ALL THREE OF THE LATEST ASSIGNMENTS (HW3, HW4, and Essay 3), I assume you have stopped participating and will drop you this Friday.

If you drop the class, you will continue to receive a few emails from me since dropping the class doesn't take you off my mailing list. You can either email to ask that I remove you from the mailing list, or just ignore my emails since there will only be a few more coming this semester.

The College won't allow anyone to drop after this Friday, so make sure you meet all remaining deadlines.

Remember that Essay 4 is due this Monday. Start reading the Asimov novel now if you haven't already. The last weeks of the semester are about this book, and you CANNOT rely on a summary of it.

First, just a note about essay feedback. I want to be sure you are all aware that you can access your essays on turnitin, where you can see comments, sometimes inserted in the essay and sometimes as an overall general comment. Just as importantly, be sure you are seeing the score card that explains the basis of how your grade was calculated. As always, you are free to see me during office hours for further help. Also, note a small mistake on the score card for this last essay. One of the categories refers to satire in the article which applies to the previous assignment. Please disregard that.

Also, a word of advice about unit four. This applies both to the optional discussion posts and the essay itself. When discussing whether a person is guilty, be careful to avoid circular reasoning. That is, do not say that he is guilty because what he did was wrong. These exercises are testing your ability to take definitions and theories and apply them to facts clearly. Show how each person's acts do or don't fit the criteria of the crime. I strongly recommend using analogies to help make your point. That is, invent hypothetical examples to compare with the cases that will help make your point. This is a powerful tool for argument.

It is Spring Break at El Camino College. I will not be checking the forums or email until April 17. For this reason, the schedule gives you one week more for Essay 3 (due on April 25) than for any of the other essays. Also, obviously, no on-campus office hours between April 11-15.

I have a number of important announcements to make.

Please take some time right now to assess your status in the class. First, are you sure you are enrolled? With online classes, students sometimes don't realize that they are not really enrolled in the class, and the instructor doesn't notice either since there is no roll-call. Take a moment to check your class roster.

Second, do you have a realistic chance of passing? After receiving your score for Essay 2 (half of them aren't graded yet), if you have fewer than 220 points then it doesn't seem likely that you can get enough points to pass. If you have fewer than 120 points then it is really not possible. In either case, you should seriously consider whether it might better to drop the class to avoid an F. Ask me first if you have any doubts about your status in the class.

Third, have you been receiving feedback on your essays? Once graded, the essays can be retrieved from turnitin.com. You should be seeing comments on the paper, and a rubric or scorecard that indicates your strengths and weaknesses. Again, remember that you can get still more individualized feedback at office hours. There is a link on the home page that allows you to sign up for a time slot on Monday or Thursday evenings.

Finally, a question came up as to whether Essay 3 requires research and/or a Works Cited list. Here's my answer:

I would think that anyone reading the Riss excerpt I gave you would feel the need to know more in order to judge whether the police acted negligently. Look at this part:

"When, however, as time went on and it was established that Linda was a reputable person, that other verifiable attempts to injure her or intimidate her had taken place, that other witnesses were available to support her claim that her life was being threatened, something more was required."

As a reader, I wonder, "how did they establish she was reputable? How did they verify the other attempts, and what did the witnesses say and were they convincing?" I haven't given you those facts, and it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to go looking for them. Googling Linda Riss will bring up tons of resources. Do you have to do research on this essay? No, I haven't said so. Would it hurt? No, it could only help. In short ,research will help but is not necessary.

In any case, you WILL need a Works Cited list that, at minimum, lists the two cases. Put the italicized case name along with a paragraph number in each parenthetical citation (Riss, par. 2). In the Works Cited list, if you cite the cases directly off the Online Handout, then do this:

"Riss v. City of New York." 22 N.Y.2d 579 New York Court of Appeals. 1968. Unit 3 Online Handout. Jeff Jung, ed. El Camino College. 30 Mar 2011. Web. .

On the other hand, if you decide to look up the full court opinion and cite from that, then the Works Cited entry would end after "1968."

For the DeLong case, you can substitute the necessary information from the top of the excerpt. The court name doesn't show there, but it is New York Court of Appeals also.

Obviously, if you do choose to do outside research, it must be cited.

Correction on Essay 2 Due Date

You should be browsing www.theonion.com to find an article you want to use. I cannot help you with the essay if you don't post. I am guaranteeing responses to all ideas posted up until March 23 at 11:59 pm. Ideas posted after that will receive responses as time allows.

Lately, I have received many requests for technical help and/or explanations of assignments AFTER they are already due. I can only help you before, not after.

A comment about one of the discussion forums

This remark is for those who have or plan to contribute to the discussion on evaluating websites for the purposes of an asylum case.

I'm glad people are posting to this discussion, but let me remind you all that to receive credit, I am looking for a full evaluation. The instructions for the assignment define a full evaluation as including attention to "who has created the site, what their underlying agenda might be, what signs indicate accuracy or inaccuracy, how recent the information appears to be, how verifiable and reliable the information seems, and anything else you deem important."

Establishing an underlying agenda can only be done by thoroughly discussing the author's identity and pointing to clues in the writing that suggest an agenda. Signs of accuracy/inaccuracy have to be pointed out specifically, as do the clues that show how recent it may be. This is a discussion that should take a half-hour to an hour to write. You are trying to convince the reader as to why we should believe in the website. Ask yourself what it would take to convince someone and write accordingly.

Essay 1 due Monday @ 6pm

This is just a reminder e-mail that Essay One is due this Monday at 6:00 PM sharp.

I would like to make very clear my policy about deadlines. I expect students to submit work well in advance of the deadline. For every assignment, I receive several submissions one or two minutes after the deadline. I have no interest in hearing the sad stories about how this happened. It is not fair for me to make judgment calls about who has good reasons or how late is too late. It has always been my strong belief that the only fair policy is to say that one minute late is too late. I urge you to follow the wise practice of submitting the paper on Sunday or Monday morning at the latest.

One other note: I am sorry that the assignment appears out of order on the turnitin site. I just received word from technical support that it cannot be changed. I find this as ridiculous as you do, but we will live with what we cannot change. Please take extra care that you are always submitting the right assignment.

As soon as you are done with this essay, you can begin on Unit Two. It follows the same format, so start with the homework assignment (using quotes to discuss live bands on campus), which is due on March 14.

Finally, note that in addition to creating discussion forums for the two optional discussions of Unit 2, I am also creating a forum where you have the option to post your idea (the Onion article and what you will say about it) for the second essay.

MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS

It is important that before submitting your essay you be sure that it is in its final form. If you want to change something after submitting, you can resubmit BUT only if I have not graded it yet. Once I grade a paper, it is final.

SOURCES

Some of you may decide to use sources for information that will help support your complaint essay. We will not study the proper method of citing and using sources until Unit 2. For now then, just observe this very important rule: when drawing information from a source (even if you have put it in your own words) you must tell the reader what source it is coming from. CORRECT EXAMPLE: According to a study released on the CDC website, the repeated use of old salt shakers is a leading cause of tuberculosis. INCORRECT EXAMPLE: The repeated use of old salt shakers is a leading cause of tuberculosis. Failure to give credit to your source is plagiarism and is grounds for immediate expulsion from the college. When in doubt, give credit to your source.

DISCUSSION BOARD

I would like to stress one more time the importance of reading the discussion board. In my replies, I give very important information that you are responsible for. Even if you choose not to submit your essay idea to the board, reading posts from other students will give you an idea of what is acceptable and what is not. Once more, the essay must be about a specific problem that you have experienced, and the complaint must be directed to someone who can do something about it, not to the government or to society as a whole. Essays that merely complain about life or the country or the world’s problems will not receive passing grades. The ability to follow instructions is probably the most important skill being tested in English 1A.

Retrieving Feedback

Here are a few words about retrieving your graded assignments. Next to the assignment listing in turnitin.com, click on “Show detail.” Then click the “view” link underneath “Grademark.” When the viewer opens, look for three things. 1) there may be comments in the text itself. Sometimes they will be right on the page, and other times they will be in a blue bubble. In that case, hold the mouse pointer over the bubble without clicking, and a comment will pop up. 2) on the right side, there may be some general comments. 3) On some assignments (not HW1) look for a button marked rubric in the bottom right corner. Clicking it will bring you to a kind of score card that gives you specific information about how your grade was calculated. This will be used for the longer essays and some homework assignments.

If you want more detailed feedback, you are welcome to visit me during my office hours (see syllabus for times). This can be done without an appointment, but it is always better to make one so as to avoid waiting.

Week 2 Reminders

First, I would like to give a reminder about the discussion forum. At the end of the semester, you can earn extra credit by sending me a copy of all the posts that you made on time to the discussion forum (you will send them all together in a single submission). To save yourself a very boring task of collecting them later, get in the habit of copying any posts that you make into a word file just after you post them so you will have them all together at the end. Please copy the post directly from the forum, including the time and date -- just highlight the post on the forum page and copy and paste it into a word document that you hold onto until the end.

Please note that you cannot earn extra credit for posts submitted late. I try to respond to late posts that ask questions of me, but since they are late a response is not guaranteed. However, I leave the forums open past the deadline anyway so that all of you can continue to exchange ideas and communicate with me as time allows.

Reading the posts and my responses is one of the best things you can do to improve your performance. This is true even if none of the posts are yours. It will stop you from committing common mistakes. So if you did not share your idea for the complaint Essay, I suggest you read through the forum to see which ideas I approved and how I suggested development for them. I penalize essays that do things I specifically advised in the forum not to do.

This class is in large part about the ability to read and comprehend directions. Eight of 60 people spelled their e-mail address incorrectly when taking the syllabus survey. Attention to details like that matters. Several people sent me the Unit 1 Essay instead of the Unit 1 Homework (and didn’t do the Unit 1 Homework). While I am impressed that you wrote the essay so quickly, I will not be able to give you credit for Homework 1 because of this. I will be moving your submitted essay the right category. Sorry that the categories are in a strange order; turnitin won’t let me rearrange them.

Some Tips for Homework #1

Several people have asked, so here are some tips on how to do Homework #1. Remember in the future that if you have a general question of this kind, posting it in the discussion forum at turnitin.com will allow others to benefit from the answer. By the same token, remember to check that forum from time to time to see if there is anything that will help you.

By the way, if this your first visit to this page, make sure you read the Welcome/orientation message that is just below this one.

I deliberately left the instructions for the Homework 1 a bit flexible so that you could decide how best to handle it. Think of it as a role-playing exercise. A client has handed you this narrative, and it is terrible. How will you help him? When you write to him about it to fix it, what will you say?

You could use a format like this:

“She has been acting crazy.” -------- Exactly what behaviors has she been doing that you call crazy?

Quotation from narrative ------------- the problem you see with it, the questions you have about it.

Etc.

Or you could write a paragraph of your own discussing what makes the narrative weak. Example: “The writer needs to change x. He also needs to clarify y.

Some of you have actually just rewritten the whole paragraph, fixing the weaknesses and inventing details where necessary. That works too, since we can imagine it is a model you’re giving the client to follow.

Again, role-play. What can you set down on paper that will help the client to make this narrative more clear and convincing?

This is the Home Page for Dr Jung's Spring 2011 English 1A class. Announcements and assignment instructions are found on this page. A second site, Turnitin.com, will be used to send and retrieve homework and essays, participate in Discussion Forums, and view grades. Please read this announcement and then proceed to the Unit One instructions (linked on the side menu) to begin your coursework.

Always check here for important announcements, at least three times per week. Bookmark this page or include it among your Favorites so you can get back here quickly.

Most importantly, if you have not already done so, take the Syllabus Survey no later than February 19, or you will be dropped from the class. Note that you’ll be providing your name and e-mail address both when you take the Syllabus Survey and when you register for turnitin.com. Essay

Write an essay that registers a complaint about an experience or condition that you have undergone. This essay should revolve around a central thesis (what you want the reader to see or do about your situation/experience) and be supported by specific evidence discussed. It must be about an experience that happened to you personally and be directed to a specific reader OTHER than the state or federal government. Thus, do not write about state or federal laws that you want changed. Appropriate topics include problems with a business, employer, school, city authority, or personal acquaintance.

This is somewhat like a complaint letter, but at a 1,000 words it will be more complex. Your essay might detail the effects of the problem, examples of the problem, comparisons with other providers who render their service in a better way, proof of what you say, reasons you should be believed, or extended narratives. Organize the presentation of your material into about three sub-topics.

Use what you have learned about narrative to make your explanation of the problem clear. Use what you have learned about structure to make sure your thesis/roadmap sets out (about) three subtopics that your complaint will explore, and devote one paragraph to each subtopic.

Your grade will depend heavily on your use of the structure that you learned and use of detail.

IMPORTANT***: Watch this youtube video that explains MLA documentation. This is extremely crucial, as all papers you write must use this system of documentation. You can read more about MLA documentation in the McWhorter textbook or by googling MLA citation. For complete directions on exactly how to cite every kind of source, see the McWhorter text or use Diana Hacker's Research and Documentation Online guide. When looking at Hacker's website, you need to know all the material that is found under the Documenting Sources menu on the left side of the page (except the link marked optional). However, you do not NEED to memorize the many different variations of how to write an in-text citation or Works Cited entry. Instead, you need to know the general system and use the Hacker guide or the one in the McWhorter textbook for reference. NOTE: there are websites that will make the Works Cited list for you, but they make many mistakes. You can try www.easybib.com, but it's your responsibility to know how it should be done and to fix the mistakes that these generators always make.

These articles are parodies, revisions of real news stories told in a way that is not only funny but also designed to make some kind of attack or criticism of the situation. Your essay will compare the article with the reality of the situation (using research) and explain what the author is trying to accomplish with the humor. This is an unusual kind of essay for many of you, but posting your ideas on the discussion forum will help me guide you toward an idea of what will work.

Use what you have learned about structure to make sure your thesis/roadmap sets out about three sub-topics, and devote one paragraph to each subtopic. Use what you have learned about integrating quotes to decide when and how to bring in quotes from the story and from your research. The essay MUST incorporate outside research to help explain the humor of the news article.

Your grade will depend heavily on your use of the structure that you learned, and your gathering and integration of researched support.

Read the section labeled "Attempts" on page 4-6 of this Online Handout. Then write about a total of 250 words in which you explain which of the 13 numbered examples you think that the law should punish, and which it should not. Your response should establish a clear set of criteria that help the reader understand the REASONING behind your choices. You don't have to account for all 13 items. Essay

Write an essay in response to any ONE of the questions below. In addition to structure, integration of quotes, punctuation, conciseness, and grammar, your essay will be graded on its use of the text to give thoroughly supported answers.

oKlorissa. In The Naked Sun, Klorissa says that the people of Solaria experience no material wants, no disease, and no jealousy. She concludes from this that there is no reason to kill. However, the novel proves her wrong. The issue Asimov argues here is that you cannot get rid of motives to kill. Write a paragraph providing a few instances from the novel to show what motives remain. (Note: In this sentence, “material wants” means “shortage of material things.” It doesn’t mean “desire for material things.”)

o Robots. In each novel Asimov wrote, the division between humans and robots becomes thinner. Asimov’s issue may be either that humans are losing their humanity and becoming mechanical, or that robots are gaining, or maybe that there never was any real difference in the first place? Write a paragraph that shows one or more of these arguments being developed in Asimov’s novel.

o Problems. One could say that the whole novel is about the issue of how solving one set of problems always leads to new ones. Write a paragraph demonstrating the truth of this claim, indicating how each attempt by Solaria to cure an Earthly problem led to a new problem of their own.

o Rights. One could also say that the central issue of the novel is that Baley needs to overcome his fundamental contempt for robots and view them as “people too.” Is this ridiculous? If we come to a point where beings such as robots exist, what arguments can we use to assert that humans are more important, no matter how intelligent the robots become? Write an argument paragraph persuading your readers that human life is always more important than robotic life using examples from Asimov’s book to support your points. Or, write a paragraph showing how Asimov is building a strong case that robots lives are as valuable as those of people.

o Criticism. Presumably Asimov intended us to criticize Solaria, and by extension, to criticize certain similar issues in our own world. What exactly is he criticizing? Write a paragraph trying to establish exactly what elements of this fictional world (and by implication, our own) Asimov is attacking.

o Technology. All agree that a central issue of this novel is technology, but some feel Asimov is in favor of it (in love with it) and others feel that he’s warning against it? Which is it? Write a paragraph that argues your response with proof from the novel.

o Inefficiency and reality. A theory known as McDonaldization (invented by George Ritzer) argues that our world is becoming increasingly efficient, conformist, predictable, and dehumanized. Asimov seems to pick up on this issue by portraying Solaria as a highly McDonaldized world. Write a paragraph that establishes the truth of this claim (google “McDonaldization” first to research the concept).

Future. Asimov wrote, among other things, as a prophet. That is, he was predicting things would come to pass. Write a paragraph in which you argue that recent trends suggest that we are becoming either more like or unlike Solaria and in what ways?
